There are a lot of amazing things about parenthood, but one of the coolest parts is watching your kid play with their toys. I think it’s because you know they’re not just playing — they’re learning new things while they’re playing. At least, if it’s a good toy.
For example, my toddler has been playing nonstop with her Little People® Caring for Animals Farm playset from Fisher-Price®. Every time she does, I’m right there with her, amazed by all the new things her little brain is picking up.
Like opposites. Seriously. You wouldn’t think learning opposites would be a big deal, but when it’s your kid and you’re there for the moment she puts it together? It’s actually kinda … emotional. “That’s right, ‘near’ and ‘far’ are opposites,” you tell her, stifling a sudden lump in your throat. She watches you as you wipe a little moisture from your eyes. “Allergies,” you explain.
This set comes with a farmer, a cow, horse, pig and rooster, and two food play pieces. So as soon as she sits down, she’s got plenty to do: she’s hatching chicks, tucking in the horse for its nap, and taking turns dropping the pig and cow through the hayloft. And I’m watching the whole thing.
Best one-person show I’ve ever seen.
Even better, you can get down on the floor with your kid and connect with them through playing. You grab the pig and snort and they look at you, impressed with your noise-making, and then the next day, out of nowhere, they snort like a pig! Just like that, they’ve crossed over the significant line from kid-who-can’t-snort-like-a-pig to kid-who-CAN-snort-like-a-pig.
“I taught her that!” I wanted to yell into the window of every house in the entire neighborhood. “Behold my amazing, snorting child!!!”
I didn’t yell at anyone, for the record. But I wanted to.
The other cool thing about the Little People® Caring for Animals Farm is that it’s got 3 Smart Stages® learning levels — “Discover,” “Experience,” and “Imagine” — so my kid is constantly learning new things: counting, opposites, animal sounds, colors. It starts with the basics and grows along with your child to help them create their own stories about life on the farm.
My personal favorite part might be the Discovery Buttons, which activate all kinds of songs, sounds and actions that help my kid’s imagination come to life. When she sees that little chick hatch, she just can’t wait to comfort it and give it a snack. “Did ya see my little empath taking care of those chicks?” I again wanted to shout at the neighbors. “Empathy! My kid’s got empathy, folks! And she must have gotten at least some of that from her father!”
Again, I didn’t actually yell at any of the neighbors.
There’s just nothing that beats watching your kid play, because when they get really into their imagination, they can truly go anywhere with the story they’re making up. One moment Farmer Jed™ is collecting the animals in the farmyard, and the next moment he leaps to the farm roof like he’s in a blockbuster movie about dreams or space or some alternate dimension, because that’s apparently the kind of physics my kid prefers. It’s so awesome to get to witness her imagination at work.
And another cool thing is, the farm fits with other Little People elements so your kid can expand the world they’re building. They can bring in a fire truck, a school bus or an airplane. And you can get more figure packs to bring in additional animals and even more diverse characters. There’s even one character that has a goatee, like me.
I feel like more and more there are a lot of overly high tech kids toys. I’m not opposed to screens, but there is something extra special about watching my kid build her own make-believe world as she flexes her limitless imagination.
Like I said — it’s the best one-person show I’ve ever been to.
